Περιγραφή/Description
This edition accompanied the exhibition “Glorious Victories. Between Myth and History” organized by the National Archaeological Museum in Athens (20th October 2020 - 31st October 2021) on the event of the 2,500th anniversary of the Battle of Thermopylae and the Naval Battle of Salamis, the two emblematic sites that turned into landmarks during the Greco-Persian Wars. Starting from Marathon and culminating in Plataea, the magnificent struggle of the Greeks against the mighty eastern empire brought to the fore an extraordinary system of human values and gave birth to an ideological and cultural tradition that preserved an exemplary position and utmost importance in the history of western civilization. The volume following the exhibition’s organization presents the exhibits (105 ancient works and a model of the Athenian trireme of the 5th century BC), which are related to and highlight aspects of the victorious struggle of the Greeks against the Persians. Through four individual thematic units/chapters that include selected displays – archaeological and epigraphic testimonies and works of art –, the exhibition aims to highlight the way in which the dramatic events of the time were construed and interpreted by their contemporaries and the future generations, affecting every aspect of their life and thought, and, by extension, the influence and impact on art through the ages.
